The identity card is the identification document of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In its current form, it has been issued since 2003, in accordance with the Law on the Identity Card of Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (“Official Gazette of BiH” No. 32/01, 16/02).

Issuance, cancellation and replacement of identity cards is carried out within their jurisdiction by the cantonal ministries of the interior in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , by the Ministry of the Interior of the RS in the Republic of Srpska  and by the competent authority that functions as a state institution in the Brčko District of BiH, according to the place of residence of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Identity card is a public document that proves the identity, the fact of the place and date of birth, the place of temporary or permanent residence for a displaced person and citiyens of BiH.

Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina can use an identity card to cross the state border in certain circumstances and in cases where Bosnia and Herzegovina has a bilateral agreement with another country.
