Passport of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Basic Information
The passport of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a public document used to prove identity and citizenship of BiH when crossing state borders and staying abroad.
The biometric passport of BiH (civil, diplomatic and service) has been issued since 15 September 2009 in accordance with the Law on Travel Documents of BiH.
The biometric (electronic) passport is a modern travel document containing:
- advanced anti-forgery security features,
- a contactless electronic chip,
biometric data (photograph, fingerprints and other legally prescribed data), - a machine-readable zone (MRZ).
The electronic chip enables reliable identity verification at border crossings in accordance with international security standards.
Types of Passports
Bosnia and Herzegovina issues three types of biometric passports:
- Civil passport – issued to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Diplomatic passport – issued to holders of diplomatic functions in accordance with the law.
- Service passport – issued to civil servants and other persons travelling for official purposes.
How to Obtain a Passport

AN APPLICATION FOR A PASSPORT MUST BE SUBMITTED IN PERSON ON THE PRESCRIBED FORM

PRESENTATION OF A VALID ID CARD OR OTHER PUBLIC DOCUMENT FOR IDENTITY VERIFICATION

FOR MINORS AND LEGALLY INCAPACITATED PERSONS, THE APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED BY ONE PARENT WITH THE CONSENT OF THE OTHER PARENT OR BY ANOTHER LEGAL GUARDIAN.

THE PASSPORT MAY BE COLLECTED IN PERSON
Outside Bosnia and Herzegovina
Citizens of BiH residing abroad submit applications through diplomatic and consular missions of BiH in accordance with applicable procedures.

Competent Authorities
Competent Authorities
Applications for civil passports are submitted in person according to the applicant’s place of residence and are issued by:
- Cantonal Ministries of Interior in the Federation of BiH,
- Ministry of Interior of Republika Srpska,
- Public Register of Brčko District of BiH.
Diplomatic passports are issued exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Service passports are issued exclusively by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Diplomatic and consular missions of Bosnia and Herzegovina issue passports to citizens residing abroad for three months or longer, in accordance with the Law on Travel Documents of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Validity Period
A passport for citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina is issued with a validity period of ten years. For citizens under three years of age, the passport is issued with a validity period of three years, and for citizens aged three to eighteen years, with a validity period of five years.
Diplomatic and service passports are issued with a validity period of five years.
